Ben began playing the piano at the age of 5 and the cello at the age of 11. He took weekly lessons until moving to San Diego for college, where he studied Electrical Engineering and Music.  Growing up in Kingston, PA and later in Irvine, CA, he played with a variety of string orchestras and jazz ensembles, playing the piano, cello, and percussion.  In college, he picked up the guitar, violin, harmonica, flute, and banjo.  He also started an a cappella group which became very successful.
